Kindle Instructions

If you check out a Kindle and a title you want to read is not immediately available on the device, follow the steps below to download the book from the cloud.

Kindle Paperwhite

1. From the Kindle home, tap the menu icon in the top right and select Settings.

2. Disable Airplane Mode. If you're on the COCC campus, you will be connected automatically to the Open Community Network.

3. Tab the home icon in the top left.

4. The device will automatically sync to the cloud and download new titles. (This process may take a few minutes.) To save on battery life, re-enable Airplane Mode once your title is available on the device.

Kindle Fire HD

1. From the Kindle home, tap Books at the top. You will see all titles available from the cloud.

2. Tap the title you want. If the book is not locally available on the device, an exclamation point will appear on the book cover. Tap the cover again, and you will see a pop-up that says "No Internet Connection. Please check your Wi-Fi or mobile network connection and try again." Tap Settings in the bottom right of this window.

3. The Wireless & VPN settings screen will appear. Tap Airplane Mode at the top of the menu to disable Airplane Mode. If you're on the COCC campus, you will be connected automatically to the Open Community Network.

4. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen to return to the Books screen.

5. Your title should begin downloading. When it's ready, a checkmark will appear on the cover.

6. To save on battery life, re-enable Airplane Mode once your title is available on the device. You can do this by swiping down from the top of the screen to reveal the menu. Tap the Wireless icon. Tap Airplane Mode at the top to turn it back on.

Kindle Fire HD7

1. Tap Books in the top left of the Kindle home. You will see all titles available from the cloud.

2. Tap the title you want. If the book is not locally available on the device, you will see a pop-up that says, "Your Fire is currently in Airplane Mode. You will need to disable Airplane Mode to use this feature." Tap Settings in the bottom right of this window.

3. A prompt will appear to "Enter your Pin." Type "1234" and tap Submit or the checkmark icon.

4. The Wireless settings screen will appear. Tap Airplane Mode at the bottom of the menu to disable Airplane Mode. If you're on the COCC campus, you will be connected automatically to the Open Community Network.

5. Tap the triangle at the bottom of the screen to return to the Books screen.

6. Tap the title you want again. This time the book will download to the device. When it's ready, a checkmark will appear on the cover.

7. To save on battery life, re-enable Airplane Mode once your title is available on the device. You can do this by swiping down from the top of the screen to reveal the menu. Tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it back on.
